Does your trailer have a front ramp?

Open the fron ramp, unclip the back part of the partition and slide it over, to give the illusion of space, lead your horse up to the trailer, everytime he gets a little more closer to it, or a little further in, just stand him for a minute or two to let him settle, never rush him. I assume once he has all four feet on the ramp he will walk in, dont keep him in there, just walk him striaght through. Go straight back round to the rear and walk him through again. You can use somebody encouraging him from behind if needs be, bu after a few times of walking him through you want to try without that.

Keep walking him through over and over so he is totally de-sensitised to it, once he is ok with walking through, ask him to stand in the trailer for a bit, then walk im out and back round, gradually progress to having the partition fully closed, and when your standing him in, put the breast bar across, you can then lift the ramp up.

After another few minuted I would bring the ramp back down, back him out then, bring him in again, every time he gets stressed out just walk him off for a few minutes then go back a step with the trailer, and walk him through untill he is de-sensitied again.

Use treats, or encourgaement from behind to get him in, but dont bully him or scare him as this will give him even more of a reason not to go in.

LGV And HGV Driver Training In The UK

If you fancy a life on the road, or if you've just dreamed of being a lorry driver since you were a kid, a career as a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) driver could be for you. HGV drivers employed by a haulage company get to travel all over the UK and Europe, and the pay isn't to be sniffed at either. Newly qualified HGV drivers start at about £14,000, and experienced drivers can earn up to £35,000.

So, if you're still interested in training as an HGV driver in the UK, here are a few of the things you need to know.

HGV or LGV?

HGV is, strictly speaking, an older term, as the newer and more official term is LGV, or Large Goods Vehicle. The two terms are used interchangeably, although most people in the UK haulage industry (myself included!) still prefer the term HGV. So don't be confused by HGV and LGV - they mean exactly the same thing.

Requirements for HGV Driver Training

HGV licences for the largest vehicles are divided into two main classes, C and C+E. A class C HGV is any rigid vehicle that weighs over 7.5 tonnes, whereas a C+E license will allow you to drive a larger articulated vehicle with a trailer. You have to hold a class C license before you can train for your class C+E license, and you must have a standard UK driving license before you can train for either of these. There are some age restrictions, as you have to be at least 18 to train for a class C license and over 21 for the class C+E. You also have to undergo a medical examination, which will include an eye test, to make sure that you are in good enough health to become a lorry driver.

HGV Driver Training - Theory Test

The process of training as an HGV driver in the UK is just like learning to drive a car, in that there is both a practical and theory test. In the theory test, you'll answer a series of multiple choice questions that test your knowledge of the legal and practical aspects of being an HGV driver. This is followed by a hazard perception test, where you will be shown a series of video clips and have to click a button when you spot a hazard. There is a maximum score of 75 for the HGV theory test, with a pass mark of 50.

HGV Driver Training - Practical Test

For the practical test, you will be assessed on your ability to drive an HGV vehicle in a variety of conditions. This will include a variety of turning and reverse manoeuvres in a confined space and a period of road driving. The entire test typically lasts 90 minutes. Once you've passed both the practical and the theory test, you'll have your license and you'll be ready to start work with a haulage company.

Cost of HGV Driver Training

The cost of training as an HGV driver varies. If you already work for a haulage company, they may be able to train you with their own staff at a reduced cost. Independent training at a number of HGV training centres typically costs around £1000, half-day and full day lessons available. An intensive course of four or five full days is usually enough to get someone ready for the practical test.

Additional HGV Driver Training

From September 2009, you will also have to take the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) in order to train as an HGV driver. This will be a three part test, with two sets of multiple choice questions and a set of case study questions.

If you want to drive an HGV that is transporting hazardous materials, you will need to have an Advisory Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR) certificate, which is valid for five years after which you have to take a refresher course. The initial course takes 5 days, and the refresher course 3. This qualification also increases your earning power, as lorry drivers who transport dangerous goods can potentially earn higher wages.

The Container Streamlines Freight Movement (and Can Become Offices, Shops and Houses)

We mean the shipping container here, not beer kit container. The 20 feet shipping container, 20'x8'x8.5' in size, can accommodate a mobile dwelling unit, with beds and furniture that fold into the wall, for example. Shipping containers come mostly in the standard sizes of 20 feet, 40 feet and 45 feet high-cube (the last with a height of 9.5'). If desired, containers can be customized in various ways, by constructing containers of a different dimension, or converting them into, say, houses.

Containerization

Containerization facilitates inter-modal freight transport, i.e., container ships, railroad cars, and trucks can all accommodate standard sized containers. There are also standard containers for use in aircraft. So you can transport a container from the interiors by truck or railroad to a sea or air port, and send them to a distant location where the transport process is reversed, say, from ship to truck. Specialized container handling equipment can easily transfer the containers from the one mode to another.

Streamlining of freight transport operations lowers costs, and leads to lower freight charges and increased trade. It was in the 20th century that standardization of container sizes and container-handling equipment gained momentum and appeared as an important innovation in logistics. Initially standardized with 8'x8' cross-sections and multiples of 10' lengths, containers became increasingly popular starting 1950s.

Purpose-built container ships and railcars gave momentum to container-based freight operations. The containers were transported unopened from origin to destination, being transferred from one kind of transport vehicle to another as needed. Containers could thus travel across sea, land and air with practically no disruption.

The cargo could be tightly packed into the containers with minimum wastage of space. This was in contrast to the significant storage space wastage (not to mention time wastage) that would be involved if the cargo as such were moved individually to, and stored in, the cargo holds of standard ships.

Standardization of containers involved not only their dimensions, but also corner fittings, reinforcements and identification markings. Standard pallets that fit neatly into the containers were used to pack merchandise. Container capacity is expressed in TEUs or twenty-foot equivalent units. These standards have now been accepted worldwide.

Containers used for air transport have a different set of dimensional standards that are much smaller in length, width and height.

Containers come in many types. There are 'dry van' containers for boxes, bales, pallets, drums, etc, 'reefer' containers that are temperature controlled from -25 degrees to +25 degrees centigrade, bulk containers for bulk materials and heavy machinery, tank containers for liquids, and other kinds of specials including those with rolling floors for difficult-to-handle cargo.

Container Related Issues

Containers enhance security as the contents are not visible and the doors are sealed in a manner to detect any tampering. Cargo did not "fall off" the trucks as was common in earlier days. On the other hand, the fact that containers are not typically opened meant that they could be used to transport contraband.

The increased efficiency of container based cargo handling typically leads to job losses, and moving work to inland from waterfronts.

Where two-way cargo movement is not balanced, empty containers can accumulate at certain places and transporting the bulky empty containers is often not cost effective. To handle this issue, containers are often converted to other uses.

Railroad Crossing Dangers And Safety Tips

First, the good news about vehicle/train collisions at railroad crossings; the number of collisions at railroad crossings has declined from a high of 13,557 incidents in 1978 to 2,746 in 2007, a decline of 80%. Now the bad news; in 2007, there were still 2,746 incidents. Drivers are still not getting the word that trying to outrace a train at a railroad crossing is a lose/lose proposition. 94% of the collisions and 87% of the fatalities at railroad crossings are caused by risky driving behavior or poor judgment on the part of the driver. Look at the facts:

• A large vehicle such as a train appears to be moving slower than it actually is. The maximum speed for freight trains is 60 mph while passenger trains can travel up to 80 mph.
• Even at low speeds, the impact force of a train is tremendous. A single locomotive weighing 432,000 pounds traveling at 35 mph will impart a collision force on a car of 885,000 tons of force. In order for an average car to impart that kind of crash force it would have to be traveling more than 4,200 mph.
• Once the train's engineer applies the brakes, the train will travel several hundred feet before air pressure is applied to the brakes on all the cars of a train and they fully take hold.
• An average freight train takes 1 1/2 miles to come to a complete stop.
• Of all the public railroad crossings (those crossing public roads and highways), only about 53% are controlled by electronic signals. Many private railroad crossings (on farms and industrial parks) are not marked at all.

How do you guard against becoming one of the statistics?

• Assume that there is a train on every track at all times, even tracks that are rarely used. If there is a stop sign at the crossing, stop! If there is a yield sign or electronic signals, slow and make sure that no trains are approaching.
• If there are two or more tracks, make sure there a train isn't coming in the other direction. In 2000, a firefighter returning from a false alarm waited at the crossing gates for a northbound train to pass. The train passed and stopped just beyond the crossing. The firefighter drove his fire truck around the gate and was struck and killed by a southbound train whose view was obscured by the stopped northbound train. The crossbuck railroad sign will indicate how many tracks there are at the crossing.
• When stopping at a railroad crossing make sure you stop no less than 15 feet from the tracks.
• Never cross a railroad track unless you are sure there is room on the other side for your vehicle to completely clear the tracks. Many collisions occur when a vehicle's rear end is still hanging out over the tracks.
• Don't shift gears while crossing a railroad track; it could cause your vehicle to stall.
• If your car stalls on a railroad track, get out of the car immediately, clear the tracks and call 911 for help. If a train is coming, run away from the tracks in the direction of the approaching train. If you run away from the approaching train, you may be injured or killed by flying debris when the train smashes into your car.
• Never try to beat a train at a crossing or snake around the lowered crossing gates. Once the lights start to flash and the crossing gate arms go down, the train will appear in about 20 seconds.
