A Beginners Guide to Model Trains

This is a general overview of what the model train hobby is and what it entails. In a effort not to discourage new beginners to this ever expanding pastime, this article will not be too technical yet designed to catch your interest.

The first thing that any model train hobbyist should know is about scale, and gauge. Scale refers to the actual size of the train engine, cars, and accessories.

They can be small enough to easily fit on a office desk top, or large enough for a garden railway. Scale is also referred to in letter form.

For example, 'G' scale train models are 1:24 scale, which means it is just one twenty-fourth the size of a real locomotive. These are often found with train hobbyists who lay out their model trains in a back yard setting, such as interwoven through gardens, and other landscaping.

The 'Z' scale is a mere 1:220, meaning it is 220 times smaller than a real train. As mentioned earlier, this size is ideal for a desk top lay out, but it is so small in size that they are difficult to work with, and are not in wide use.

The next part about model trains is gauge. While this is often confused with scale by many beginners, it is NOT the same as scale, and mixing up the two will definitely anger experienced train buffs.

What gauge measures is the distance between the trail track rails. For a simple example, if you have a 9gauge train track, this means that there is nine millimeters of space between the inside of the rails.

In this case, the bigger the gauge, the bigger the space. Now while this may seem confusing, don't worry.

HO scale is 1:87, and is ideal for many new beginners, as well as many other hobbyists. It is small enough to fit well with many different layouts, yet big enough for the average person to handle, and they show well.

This is the most commonly used scale in the model train world not only because of its versatility, but also because parts and accessories are easy to find. This brings us to layouts and accessories.

Having model trains would be really boring if all it entailed was a train engine moving along a track. That is why a model train can include many different train cars, passenger cars, hoppers, and tank containers, just to name a few.

Then there are all the layout accessories, trestles, miniature people and vehicles, as well as buildings and scenery. The possibilities are really only limited to your imagination.

You can even create your own landscaping ideas, with plastic plants torn apart for trees, shrubs, and other plants. You could also use old cleaned out tin cans, painted, for things like grain silos, or oil refinery tanks.

There are many basic sets a beginner can buy, with all things to start your hobby. You can find many of these on websites, or you could also start at your local hobby shop.

A retailer can not only offer many different ideas, but can also answer many if not all of your questions. Hopefully you will want to know more information about model trains, and you can find many example layouts online for creative ideas.

Movies About Trains, Train Horns and Intrigue Pt. 2

I don’t know what it is about winter, but where I am at, with the snow falling and the holidays just around the corner, all I want to watch is movies about trains, train horns and mystery. Here is a list of a few of the best train-themed movies ever made.

“Once Upon a Time in the Westâ€

This epic Italian spaghetti western from the man who created the genre, Sergio Leone, was his grand achievement, and one of Henry Fonda’s most interesting roles, playing against type as a blood hungry villain. At the heart of the film’s plot is the story of a family who won’t give up their land in the Old West of America to make way for a railroad. The motif of the railroad as a symbol for a lost time in America is constantly referenced in the film. In the end, no one really wins, with Fonda and Bronson finally battling it out, one of them surviving, but no one happy.

“Shanghai Expressâ€

Josef von Sternberg directed this vehicle for his popular leading lady, Marlene Dietrich, in 1932. IN the midst of a civil war divided China, British Captain Doc is traveling on the express train from Beiping to Shanghai when he meets his former love, and a mysterious woman named Shanghai Lily. Much of the film takes place in the Shanghai Express where the movie got its name from, and is one of Marlene Dietrich’s most famous roles, even it her Yellowface role as a woman of Eastern ethnicity seems politically incorrect today.

“The Generalâ€

Buster Keaton was at the top of his game in this hilarious train themed fim. Keaton plays a Southern railroad engineer who divides his time between his love for his train engine and his woman, Annabelle Lee. Keaton performed all of his own stunts, showing that he was a genius at comic timing and slapstick humor.

“Lady on a Trainâ€

This black and white comedy from 1945 stars Deanna Durbin, one of the lesser known stars of the 40s and 50s. The film is a comedic mix of musical, film noir and mystery stories. When a young woman witnesses a murder in a building while passing by on the train, she goes to the police but finds that no one believes her story.

Engine House
If I drive 16 miles per day, how many times can I restart the engine without running down the battery?

I had a bad battery that I replaced, and I had thought that it was because I started the engine 6 times in a day. (stopping at work, gym, shop, pub, mates house every day)

Obviously it depends on many factors such as vehicle type, temperature, battery type etc but I'm just looking for a rough idea.

Some of the answers here make me laugh,24 volt battery my arse. It would take about 2 minutes to replace what you take out of your battery by starting the car up. You shouldnt have any trouble at all.

Guide To A Successful Career In Search Engine Marketing

Introduction to SEM (Search Engine Marketing)

Search engines have become an integrated part of our lives. In today's world, 'being online' is not an option. In US alone, around 7 billion searches are being made every month. Travel, finance, entertainment, education, health or ecommerce, search engines are being used to find information, products and services.

Search Engine Marketing or SEM is the process of marketing a website via search engines. SEM strategies primarily consist of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising.

SEO is the process of improving natural or organic rankings on search engines. Search engines rank websites based on variety of parameters and each search engine has its own algorithm to rank different swebites. However, one common and most important ranking parameter is a site's credibility which is determined by the quality and quantity of other sites which link to it. PPC is a type of internet advertising in which the advertiser pays an agreed amount to a search engine for every click a visitor makes on the advertisement. It is also referred to as Cost Per Click (CPC), Paid Placement and Search Engine Advertising.

SEM Industry

According to a research by SEMPO, Search Engine Marketing industry was at $9.45 billion in North America in 2006. It is expected to be over $18 billion industry by the year 2011. The SEM industry grew significantly in 2006 as compared to 2005 when it was less than $6 billion in size. According to the same research, while SEO is the most popular form of SEM, it accounted for around 10% of the total spending. However, Paid Advertising accounted for over 85% of the total SEM spending in 2006.

Over the last few years, the importance and the acceptance of SEM has grown significantly. According to a survey by SEMPO, of all the respondents, more than 50% said that Senior Management at their companies are 'very involved' in their SEM program. Sales and Brand awareness were the two major objectives behind all SEM programs.

SEM Job Profiles

Growth in the SEM industry has created a strong demand for experienced and talented Search Engine Marketing professionals. This demand is expected to grow even faster in the coming years with lots of new opportunities for existing and budding Search Engine Marketers.

The SEM industry offers various kinds of job roles for its professionals. Given that the industry is still evolving, these job roles are also changing and new roles are being created with new initiatives. For instance, online PR (Public Relations) has gained significant growth over the last year and so is the need for PR writers and marketers.

An SEM professional may be employed for an in-house work or by an agency. For instance, ecommerce companies like eBay, Google, Yahoo hire SEM professionals for their own products and services promotion. However, agencies like iProspect hire people to serve their clients for various SEM assignments. One may also work as a freelancer. Since every activity of an SEM job can be done online, lots of freelancing opportunities exist for independent SEM professionals. Find below the list of some of the key job roles in the SEM industry. Please note that depending upon the size of the organization, some of the mentioned roles may be combined into a single role.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

• SEO Manager
• SEO Team Lead
• SEO Executive (Link Building, Keyword Research etc)
• Content Writer and Editor
• Account Manager (for organizations who serve multiple clients)

PPC (Pay Per Click)

• Campaign Executive
• Campaign Manager
• Ad Writer or Copywriter
• Account Manager (as above)

Besides the above mentioned roles, organizations also hire technical professionals and graphic designers for building tools and technologies for effective SEM implementation and service.

SEM Salaries

Although there is no official data available on the salaries earned by SEM professionals, the annual salary for an SEM professional in US typically range between $30,000 for an SEM exeuctive to $250,000 for a VP level position depending upon the years of experience and the location. The salary offered for similar roles in India range between Rs 120,000 (approx $2500) to Rs 30,00,000 (approx $65000) per annum.

In-house professionals demand higher salaries than professions working in an SEM agency. Peculiar Homes For Sale in Italy - Churches, Lighthouses, Train Stations, These Are the New Dwellings

The first to think about it and to obtain enough success was the Canadian entrepreneur Peter Gatien, better known as the king of night clubs in New York. His discotheque, the "Limelight" in the Big Apple, was opened in 1983 in a deconsecrated church on the Sixth Avenue. After a few years he replicated in London where the "Limelight" found its location in a 1754 former Presbyterian church in Shaftesbury Avenue. Since then the idea to convert properties such as former places of worship, but also level crossing houses, lighthouses, factories and even slaughterhouses into homes has taken hold throughout the world and has landed also in Italy. Of course we are not yet in the same situation as the US where the credit crunch forced churches and congregations to put several places of worship on the market, but what once was a niche trend now is becoming ever more popular.

According to the last data from the Italian land registry office, under the category "Properties for non- residential use" in which are included buildings of worship, but also lighthouses, towers, fortresses, stations and even bridges, are only 60,875, just the 0.11% of all properties in Italy. But is the rarity of this type of properties that makes them so demanded by people who want to live in peculiar homes. Can you imagine the difference between the charm of living in a VII century church compared to living in condominium in the outskirt of a big city?

"To give an economic use to properties that didn't have that use in the past - explains Mario Breglia, president of the property research and study institute "Scenari Immobiliari" - it's a trend that is becoming ever more popular in Italy. A few years ago the Public Property Trust put on the market 362 properties used as summer camps, a third of them were in Emilia Romagna. After a few years about half of them were converted into business use, manly into hotels. We can say that in areas where the property market is lush this type of buildings gains a value that didn't have previously.

The price of this type of properties differs from area to area and the difference can be very wide; for instance a small church of 170 square metres in Florence goes for "only" €780,000, another church of 840 square metres in the centre of Naples is sold for €5,000,000. But not only churches are for sale, on the internet can be found also road mender's houses on auction with bid prices starting from €19,000 to over €600,000. Definitely more peculiar is the sale of the town's slaughterhouse of Spoleto (Umbria) with a bid starting from €2,000,000 for a 710 square metre property. Ferrovie dello Stato (The Italian Railways) often put on the market its properties and the railway station of Cervaro (Puglia) has a starting bid price of €9,300,000 whereas to buy the former school of Chilini Ozieri (Sardinia) are requested just €128,000.

But beware of what you buy: what seems a great bargain at first sight not always turns to be as such. "The buying cost is the least - says Mr Breglia - the problems start with the renovation, that can result to be a lot more expensive that expected. In Italy, at the moment, nearly nothing can be pulled down and rebuilt, then is very important to know all the aspects of that property to see if it can be converted into a home or whether there is the chance to negotiate a permission with the municipality. Another aspect that must be taken into consideration is the location of the property. The rarity of this type of properties makes impossible to compare the price with similar properties to understand whether the price is fair or not. "If the property market in a certain area is lush then there are not voids" says Mr Breglia, "in Milan a lot of buildings are converted into exhibition areas, but the same building in another city such as Campobasso can remain unsold.

It is also true though, that whoever convert such a property into their own home probably take this decision more with their hearts than with their wallet.

where do I find an engine number on an engine?

My car went kaput the other day, and the garage it was towed to say the engine is damaged. (Piston and vales etc)

The mechanic says the easiest thing to do is get an engine out of another one and replace it. He says the replacement engine has done 30,000 miles which for a car of 8 yrs age is unusually low... (my current one has 100k on it)

Firstly how can I verify that he has indeed swapped the engine and simply not tightened a few bolts, and secondly how can I confirm the engine number and mileage of the new engine???

GO to your local library and visit the librarian, ask for the automotive manual section, You need to reference your specific car and see if the manuals show you that info, most of them do as far as I have seen.
OR
Visit your local dealer that is still in business that deals in your car.
Ask them to verify the number against the company records.

How Can Search Engine Optimization Benefit for your Website?

Search Engine Optimization is a process of selecting the most appropriate targeted keyword phrases related to your site and ensuring that this ranks your site highly in search engines so that when someone searches for specific phrases it returns your site on tops. It basically involves fine tuning the content of your site along with the HTML and Meta tags and also involves appropriate link building process.

The most popular search engines are Google, Yahoo, MSN Search, AOL and Ask Jeeves. Search engines keep their methods and ranking algorithms secret, to get credit for finding the most valuable search results and to deter spam pages from clogging those results. A search engine may use hundreds of factors while ranking the listings where the factors themselves and the weight each carries may change continually. Algorithms can differ so widely that a web page that ranks number 1 in a particular search engine could rank number 200 in another search engine.

New sites need not be submitted to search engines to be listed. A simple link from a well established site will get the search engines to visit the new site and begin to spider its contents. It can take a few days to even weeks from the referring of a link from such an established site for all the main search engine spiders to commence visiting and indexing the new site.

If you are unable to research and choose keywords and work on your own search engine ranking, you may want to hire someone to work with you on these issues.

Search engine marketing and promotion companies, will look at the plan for your site and make recommendations to increase your search engine ranking and website traffic. If you wish, they will also provide ongoing consultation and reporting to monitor your website and make recommendations for editing and improvements to keep your site traffic flow and your search engine ranking high. Normally your search engine optimization experts work with your web designer to build an integrated plan right away so that all aspects of design are considered at the same time.

There are few elements that you must have when doing search engine optimization and that is using keywords in page titles and understanding keyword density.

Use Keywords in Page Titles

It is recommended to use keywords in page titles itself. This title tag is different from a Meta tag, but it is worth considering it in relation to them. Whatever text one places in the title tag between the title and title portions will appear in the title bar of browsers when they view the web page. Some browsers also append whatever you put in the title tag by adding their own name, as for example Microsoft Internet Explorer or OPERA.

The actual text you use in the title tag is one of the most important factors in how a search engine may decide to rank your web page. In addition, all major web crawlers will use the text of your title tag as the text they use for the title of your page in your listings.

If you have designed your website as a series of websites or linked pages and not just a single Home Page, you must bear in mind that each page of your website must be search engine optimized. The title of each page i.e. the keywords you use on that page and the phrases you use in the content will draw traffic to your site.

The unique combination of these words and phrases and content will draw customers using different search engine terms and techniques, so be sure you capture all the keywords and phrases you need for each product, service or information page.

The most common mistake made by small business owners when they first design their website is to place their business name or firm name in every title of every page. Actually most of your prospective customers do not bother to know the name of your firm until after they have looked at your site and decided it is worth book marking.

So, while you want your business name in the title of the home page, it is probably a waste of valuable keywords and space to put it in the title line of every page on your site. Why not consider putting keywords in the title so that your page will display closer to the top of the search engine listing.

Dedicating first three positions for keywords in title avoiding the stop words like and, at and the like is crucial in search engine optimization.

Keyword Density

Keyword density is an indicator of the number of times the selected keyword appears in the web page. But mind you, keywords should not be over used, but should be just sufficient enough to appear at important places.

If you repeat your keywords with every other word on every line, then your site will probably be rejected as an artificial site or spam site.

Keyword density is always expressed as a percentage of the total word content on a given web page.

Suppose you have 100 words on your web page not including HMTL code used for writing the web page, and you use a certain keyword for five times in the content. The keyword density on that page is got by simply dividing the total number of keywords, by the total number of words that appear on your web page.

The accepted standard for a keyword density is between 3 percent and 5 percent, to get recognized by the search engines and you should never exceed it.

Remember, that this rule applies to every website page on your site. It also applies to not just to one keyword but also a set of keywords that relates to a different product or service. The keyword density should always be between 3 percent and 5 percent.

Simple steps to check the density:

1. Copy and paste the content from an individual web page into a word processing software program like Word or Word Perfect.

2. Go to the Edit menu and click Select All. Now go to the Tools menu and select Word Count. Write down the total number of words in the page.

3. Now select the Find function on the Edit menu. Go to the Replace tab and type in the keyword you want to find. Replace that word with the same word, so you do not change the text.

4. When you complete the replace function, the system will provide a count of the words you replaced. That gives the number of times you have used the keyword in that page.

5. Using the total word count for the page and the total number of keywords you can now calculate the keyword density.

By doing proper Search Engine Optimization for your website you will be able to push your site into better position. But the process of choosing the most appropriate and suitable targeted keyword phrases related to your site is a must and must be carried out properly. This is to ensure that all the keywords you used will ranks your site highly in search engines so that when someone searches for specific phrases it returns your site on tops.

It is essential to tweaking the content of your site with the highly searches or your preferable keywords along with HTML and Meta tags and also involves appropriate link building process.

Glacier National Park: Lodging Alternatives at the Four Amtrak Train Stations by Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park received its designation in 1910. George Bird Grinnell, an early Montana explorer, was instrumental in prodding the United States government to protect this land. Today, about 2 million people visit the 1500 square miles of the park annually.

Fortunately, Glacier National Park is well served by Amtrak’s Empire Builder year-round. The Great Northern Railway (GN), which operated on the tracks Amtrak uses today, provided the initial lodging in the area along its stops. Here are lodging alternatives close to the four Glacier stops (going from east to west):

East Glacier Park: In 1913, GN opened its first Glacier lodge, the Glacier Park Hotel in East Glacier Park. Now known as the Glacier Park Lodge and Resort, the hotel retains the rugged looks of a century ago with modern amenities. The resort is open from late-May to late-September. Located across the street from the Amtrak train station, the 161-room lodge has accommodations that range from rustic “value lodge” rooms to a “Glacier Golf house” situated about ½ mile from the main lodge. The resort also has three restaurants and a “Cowboy Cookout” on Tuesday and Wednesdays. There are two retail stores on the property. Finally, there are over 20 other hotels and campgrounds nearby.

Essex: In a small sliver of land between Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness, lie Essex and the Izaak Walton Inn. Built in 1939 by GN to house winter snow removal crews, this hotel operates year-around. The Izaak Walton is located adjacent to the Amtrak stop at Essex. You have a choice of one of 33 rooms in the inn, four restored railroad cabooses, and six modern family cabins. The restaurant is opened for three meals a day. Reproductions of historic Great Northern dinnerware are the featured items in the hotel’s James J. Hill Gift Shop.

West Glacier: There are dozens of hotels and campground close to West Glacier. Three properties are on the shore of Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park. On the south end, in the Village of Apgar, there is the Village Inn at Apgar (the last Glacier-area lodge built by GN) and the Apgar Village Lodge. Apgar has a visitor center, restaurant and gift stores. On Lake McDonald’s north end, are the magnificent Lake McDonald Lodge, Cottages and Inn. The main lodge was built by GN in 1914 in a Swiss Chalet motif. The resort has three restaurants, a gift shop, and a campstore.

Whitefish: Columbia Falls, Kalispell and Whitefish have numerous lodging options including traditional hotels, condos, bed and breakfasts, ranches and campgrounds. Within an hour’s drive from Glacier National Park, this alternative is attractive to those who want to experience more than just the park. For instance, Whitefish Mountain Resort provides winter sports and summer hiking activities. Also, Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River, is known for its fishing and boating activities. There are many good restaurants and shops in this area.

Bring me my guitar when I want to make a sound.
When I want to climb- bring me a mountain.
When I want to drink- bring me a fountain.
But when I want love just bring yourself.

Bring me some wings when I want to touch the sky,
Bring me a reefer when I want to get high,
Bring me a Harley when I want to feel speed,
Bring me meat when I need a feed.
When I want to feel drunk- bring me a beer,
When I want to feel scared- bring me something to fear.
But when I want love, just bring yourself.

Bring me a novel when I want to read,
Bring me a bandage should I ever bleed,
Bring me a shotgun when I want to take a life,
Bring me a diamond when I want to take a wife.
When I have to die- bring me a Bible,
When I have to live- bring me survival,
But when I want love, just bring yourself.

It really doesn't matter what other people think, because it's your poetry and only you and a few others can feel the certain emotions that you felt when you wrote this piece of art. That is the reason you wrote it, that is what poetry is! I question and ponder why people don't understand. I read the other answers of the people that have answered your question and I think, "How could they be so critical? Especially if they haven't written a single piece of poetry their self!" There is a time when criticism is beneficial, to improve others writing and to help them gain stronger emotions to write the poetry it's self, but their is a limit to the criticism. Us people could say, "Think of different rhyming words, don't try to do a free verse it will turn out all sloppy, or don't include the bible for what you want when you die (by the way I think that shouldn't be changed), but it comes down to what you feel, not others. We can give you comments and criticise, but you're the one that chooses and makes the direct ultimate decision. Good luck to you, and your poetry is wonderful!
